5 Things Business Owners Should Consider Outsourcing

There are five things business owners should consider not doing for themselves. In this article, I’ll address why doing those five things yourself for your business may be a bad idea.

The five things are:
1. Marketing and Branding
2. Business Process Management
3. Information Systems and Technology
4. Accounting and Finance
5. Legal matters such as contracts and employment agreements

For solopreneurs and small business owners, the myth: “It’s more cost-effective for me to do it myself than to outsource it” often lures them into the trap of doing almost everything themselves. Knowing how to do something is often worn as a badge of honor. In the absence of customers, and real money, doing something for my business myself is also a source of satisfaction, the satisfaction that I did something valuable that will move my business forward and promote future growth. All of that sounds good, right? Accept my invitation to consider three reasons to resist the temptation.

3 Reasons to Resist the Temptation to Do It Yourself or Alone:

1. It takes longer.
Your day-to-day obligations as a business owner make it nearly impossible for you to dedicate the time needed to design and build with the integrity required to do any of the five things listed above well and fast.

2. It impedes both business and personal growth.
Doing it for yourself takes you away from getting new clients and serving your existing clients. It’s hard, if not impossible, to serve two demanding masters, what you must do today to run your business, and what you must do to grow your business.

3. It forces you to settle for subpar deliverables.
Regardless of your level of competence, you are not an expert in that field. Therefore, though your final product may work, its efficiency and elegance will differ from what an expert could deliver.

As you can see, outsourcing some tasks that are not your core competencies can benefit your business. Of course, this doesn’t mean you should outsource everything or lose control over your operations. You are still accountable for the results. Ensuring that what’s being created and delivered is aligned with your goals and values is your job. By delegating what is not your forte or interest, you can focus more on what you do best and enjoy most and grow your business faster with less stress.
